Background
The Honorable Immigration Judge John F. Gossart, Jr. was appointed an immigration judge in Baltimore in 1982. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1967 from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law, which he attended in the evenings as a Vietnam veteran under the G.I. Bill. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969. Before joining the bench, he worked in private practice, as a Montgomery County assessor, and at the Immigration and Naturalization Service, where beginning in 1975 he handled naturalization petitions and later served as an assistant deputy commissioner for naturalization, drafting regulations, implementing statutory changes, testifying before Congressional subcommittees, and litigating immigration issues.
