KRTV reports that Ana Suda, Mimi Hernandez, and Melissa Smylie received the ACLU of Montana's 2019 Jeannette Rankin Civil Liberties Award. Suda and Hernandez were recognized for publicly challenging a Border Patrol detention based on their use of Spanish; former recipient Shahid Haque praised their willingness to seek accountability when many people subjected to profiling are too afraid to come forward.
The ceremony linked Shahid's earlier civil-rights work to a new northern-border profiling case. His remarks focused on the courage required for ordinary Montanans to become public plaintiffs against a federal agency.
