KRTV reports on Miriam Rojas-Rosas and Julio Santiago-Ortiz's lawsuit against Customs and Border Protection after a 2016 Montana traffic stop. The couple alleged that agents rejected her DACA documentation, lured him to the Havre station after initially releasing him, and detained and questioned both about alien smuggling; the government cited statements suggesting a smuggling payment and possible cartel information.
The case, brought by attorney Brian Miller, challenged aggressive northern-border enforcement against people who presented valid immigration documents. It added another Montana example of a routine highway encounter escalating into prolonged federal detention.
