NIJC Urges U.S. Department of Homeland Security to Investigate Rape at Montana Detention Center

The National Immigrant Justice Center calls for a federal investigation into Audemio Orozco-Ramirez's reported rape at the Jefferson County jail and for overdue Prison Rape Elimination Act rules covering immigration detention. NIJC and MIJA also asked ICE to certify his cooperation with the investigation so he could seek a U visa as a crime victim, rather than be deported and separated from his family.

The release shows the Montana case becoming a national policy campaign. Shahid's local representation supplied evidence for demands that federal detention standards protect people in contracted county jails, not only facilities operated directly by ICE.
