The Helena Vigilante reports on Andrea Carlson, a 67-year-old Miles City resident whom immigration authorities tried to deport before Shahid Haque discovered that she had acquired U.S. citizenship through her American father. After the immigration judge accepted the evidence and ICE declined to appeal, Carlson took an oath of allegiance in federal court and described the moment as coming home.
Carlson's case is one of the firm's clearest examples of why citizenship and immigration status cannot always be determined from a document at a counter. Shahid's work transformed a deportation case into formal recognition that his client had been an American citizen all along.
