KXLH reports on HB 392, Representative James Knox's attempt to redefine Montana citizenship around a parent's allegiance to a foreign country. Shahid, refugee advocate Wilmot Collins, the ACLU of Montana, and the American Indian Caucus warn that the bill conflicts with the Fourteenth Amendment and could deny citizenship to multiple groups of U.S.-born Montanans.
Only one person testified for the bill, while more than ten opposed it. The hearing became a prominent example of national efforts to narrow birthright citizenship appearing in the Montana Legislature.
