In this Helena Independent Record op-ed, Shahid argues that health-care reform should cover immigrants regardless of citizenship. Exclusion would leave mixed-status Montana families exposed to crushing costs and push uninsured people to delay treatment until emergency care became both more expensive and less effective.
Written during the national health-care debate of 2009, the piece joins two strands of Shahid's early Montana advocacy: access to health care as a human right and equal treatment of immigrant families.
